Last news | In an all-day meeting in March 2002, the jury awarded prizes to three of the nine submitted design proposals. First prize went to the team of Zaha Hadid (London) with landscape architects Gross.Max, (Edinburgh).
Execution started immediately after the competition’s conclusion. Construction work was filmed by several webcams and is webcast at www.bmw-werk-leipzig.de The factory and the central building were inaugurated in a ceremony with chancelor Gerhard Schröder on May 13, 2005.

Location | In the Halle/Leipzig region of Germany, the BMW Group built a new factory in the immediate vicinity of the New Leipzig Trade Fair grounds. |
Project content | Construction of the factory building started in early 2002. Manufacture of the BMW 3-series cars began in the new factory in 2005.
In the competition, the scope of work included the design for the new factory's Central Building (serving as the entrance as well as for administrative and communication purposes), facade design of the adjoining factory halls (to be developed on the basis of the Central Building's design) as well as the design of the adjacent outdoor space. |
Procedure | In coordination with Leipzig’s City Council, BMW launched a restricted, open competition for architects and landscape planners preceded by a world-wide open application procedure. The competition procedure comprised an anonymous phase with 24 competitors and a co-operative non-anonymous phase with nine shortlisted competitors. |
