On November 15, 2005 Alexey Miller, Gazprom's Management Committee Chairman and Valentina Matviyenko, St. Petersburg's Governor have announced in a common press conference the execution of an international architecture competition for a new football stadium in St. Petersburg.

SiteThe project site is the old Kirov-Stadium of St. Petersburg, located at the western point of Krestovsky Island - a seeside Island in the heart of the City.
Project contentIt is intended to build a football stadium with a capacity for 50,000 spectators, accordingly to UEFA standards.
ProcedureThe competition was organised as a limited, international, single-stage project competition with invited participants.
